Proposed alterations & change of use to a 10-storey high building which has single means of escape. We led the fire safety design and specifications using an Alternative Solution based on Verification Method design framework.

Computer fire simulations had to be undertaken both in BRISK and FDS software’s given the level of complexity and non-compliance.

From merging flow of occupants to glass breakage sensitivity analysis, electric car fires at basement including stairwell pressurisation fan simulations in support of the Alternative Solution design were undertaken to demonstrate compliance with the Building Code fire safety clauses. Liaising with the architectural designer, mechanical engineer, Fire Service, peer reviewer, local Council and the client, a cost-effective design for fire safety with stairwell pressurisation was achieved without having to install automatic sprinkler system or a secondary staircase.
